Samsung Bioepis is partnering with global pharmaceutical company Teva Pharmaceutical Industries to enter Canada’s ophthalmology biosimilar market.

Samsung Bioepis announced on July 10 through its website that it has signed a licensing and commercialization agreement with Teva for the commercialization of its ophthalmology biosimilar Opuviz in Canada.

Under the agreement, Samsung Bioepis will be responsible for regulatory approval and manufacturing of Opuviz, while Teva Canada will oversee local commercialization, including sales and marketing.

Opuviz is a biosimilar referencing Eylea (aflibercept), the blockbuster ophthalmology therapy developed by Regeneron. It received marketing authorization from Health Canada in October 2025 for the treatment of neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (AMD), macular edema following central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) and branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO), diabetic macular edema (DME), and myopic choroidal neovascularization (mCNV).

Eylea generates approximately $8 billion in annual global sales. Samsung Bioepis said the commercial launch timeline for Opuviz in Canada will be announced at a later date.

Fabien Paquet, General Manager of Teva Canada, said the agreement represents an important milestone in strengthening the company’s biosimilar portfolio in Canada. He added that the partnership expands Teva’s presence in ophthalmology while reinforcing its commitment to providing Canadian patients and healthcare professionals with access to high-quality treatment options through strategic collaborations.

Kwang Ryu, Vice President and Head of Business Development at Samsung Bioepis, said the agreement marks an important step in accelerating the company’s North American growth strategy and expanding access to ophthalmology biologics in Canada. He added that Samsung Bioepis will work closely with Teva to ensure Canadian patients have timely and reliable access to high-quality therapies.

The agreement is expected to accelerate Samsung Bioepis’ expansion of its biosimilar business across North America. The company continues to broaden its global biosimilar portfolio across multiple therapeutic areas, including immunology, oncology, and ophthalmology.
