Controversy has erupted over the use of an inaccurate depiction of the South Korean flag on the RE100 global campaign’s website. The campaign aims to encourage companies to voluntarily commit to sourcing 100% of their electricity from renewable energy sources.

RE100 is a global campaign introduced at the United Nations Climate Summit in September 2014, proposed by the non-profit international organizations Climate Group and Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

Regarding this, Professor Seo Kyoung Duk of Sungshin Women’s University stated on the 27th, “Upon verifying through reports, it was confirmed that a flawed South Korean flag photo was posted on the campaign’s official website under the Activities in Korea section.”

Seo stated, “I have sent a complaint via email requesting correction because the use of the wrong South Korean flag on the official website of a globally recognized environmental campaign could lead to misunderstandings worldwide.”

The wrong use of the South Korean flag continues to occur worldwide.

The wrong South Korean flag was used on the AFC’s 2022 Qatar World Cup Asian regional qualifying draw and souvenir T-shirts at the globally recognized theme park Legoland, sparking controversy.

In January, LCI caused a major controversy by broadcasting a graphic that combined the South Korean flag with the Japanese flag while reporting news about North Korea.

Seo emphasized, “It is crucial to rectify any misuse of the national flag, which represents a country’s identity. Now is the opportunity to introduce the South Korean flag accurately to the world, especially as Korean culture is gaining global attention.”
