Hyundai Motor Group has clinched the top spot for the second consecutive year in America’s most prestigious automotive quality survey.

On Thursday, Hyundai Motor Group announced that it had achieved the highest overall score among 17 global automotive groups in J.D. Power’s 2025 Initial Quality Study (IQS).

Now in its 39th year, the IQS is widely regarded as the gold standard for quality assessments in the automotive industry. The study tallies quality complaints from customers within the first three months of vehicle ownership, expressing results as the number of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). A lower score indicates higher customer satisfaction.

This year’s study surveyed 92,000 new car owners across 31 brands, including 18 mainstream and 13 luxury marques.

The results show Hyundai Motor Group tied for first place with the lowest average score of 178 points among the 17 global automotive groups. Hyundai secured second place among mainstream brands, scoring 173 points, while Kia landed in sixth place with 181 points. Genesis impressed in the luxury segment, claiming third place with a score of 183.

In segment-specific evaluations, the Hyundai Santa Cruz and Kia Telluride each earned top honors for best quality in the mid-size pickup truck and large sport utility vehicle (SUV) categories, respectively.

The IQS factory assessment also brought accolades, with Hyundai’s Ulsan Plant No. 5 and Kia’s Gwangju Plant No. 1 tying for second place in the Asia-Pacific region. Kia’s Mexico plant secured a third-place tie among North American facilities.

A Hyundai Motor Group spokesperson emphasized the significance of the J.D. Power survey, stating that these results are not only a crucial factor in U.S. consumers’ car-buying decisions but also serve as a key indicator of each manufacturer’s quality competitiveness. Further, noting that its strong performance in this new vehicle quality study is expected further to boost its standing in the North American market.

The spokesperson added that it remains committed to continuous quality innovation, striving to exceed customer expectations with its products.
