On June 27 in Copenhagen, Denmark, the New CLA was met in a city where electric vehicles (EVs) comprise over 60% of the car population. At first glance, it was clear that this vehicle sets a new benchmark for smart luxury. The classic yet bold Mercedes-Benz design, emotive lighting, cutting-edge infotainment, and an interior that aspires to more than entry-level all contribute to this impression.
Mercedes-Benz Stands Out Even in EVs: Design Exudes Confidence
The CLA embraces the electrification trend while maintaining Mercedes’ core identity. A power dome on the hood, short overhangs, and a long wheelbase, combined with large wheels, create a sporty stance. The front panel, featuring 142 individual light-emitting diodes (LEDs), adds a futuristic touch. The star-shaped multi-beam LED headlights and taillights proudly declare this vehicle’s Mercedes heritage, even as an EV.
The sculpted side profile and muscular shoulder lines appear as if carved from a single metal block, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship. The EV-specific wheel design contributes to an impressive drag coefficient of 0.21 Cd, underlining the vehicle’s performance credentials.
The standard panoramic roof is a standout feature. During the test drive, the clear Nordic sunlight filtered gently into the cabin. Insulated laminated safety glass, infrared film, and low emissivity (LowE) coating effectively shielded occupants from heat, even during midday drives.
Redefining Entry-Level: Expansive Dashboard Screen with AI Integration
Stepping inside, the term entry-level seems misplaced. The MBUX Superscreen, spanning the entire dashboard, creates a visually striking impact. It features a 14-inch central display, a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, and a passenger screen, all arranged in an interconnected layout. Users can group apps smartphone-style. The floating center console design emphasizes sportiness.
The artificial intelligence (AI)-powered MBUX virtual assistant was particularly impressive. It responded instantly to voice commands, such as “Hey Mercedes, what’s today’s weather?” The system leverages ChatGPT 4.0 and Microsoft Bing for conversations, while Google Gemini handles navigation-related queries.

EV-Level Quietness and Spacious Interior Accommodate Adults with Ease
The driving experience was exceptional. With an 85 kWh battery, the CLA boasts a Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) range of up to 792 km (about 492 miles). A two-speed transmission on the main drive unit ensures dynamic performance and high efficiency across all driving conditions. The EV’s characteristic quiet operation is complemented by a suspension that’s both firm and flexible. It effectively absorbed shocks from Copenhagen’s cobblestone and paved roads, minimizing cabin disturbance. The regenerative braking felt natural, and the heat pump system contributed to impressive energy efficiency. The CLA excels in space utilization. A 6 cm (about 2.4 inches) longer wheelbase compared to its predecessor allows even tall adults to ride comfortably in the rear seats. The elevated roofline and panoramic roof ensure ample headroom throughout the cabin.
The New CLA is more than just another model launch. It embodies Mercedes’ strategy of integrating internal combustion and electric powertrains. While the name remains familiar, the technology and philosophy within point towards a new era in automotive development.
Mathias Geisen, responsible for Marketing and Sales at Mercedes, stated that the CLA isn’t merely an entry-level offering. Further, it serves as both a gateway to the Mercedes brand and a bridge to higher vehicle classes. He emphasized that in terms of size, comfort, safety, and technology, it’s capable of competing with vehicles from higher segments across nearly all aspects.
