Samsung Display said its QD-OLED monitors have surpassed 5 million units in cumulative shipments as of March, cementing the technology’s position as a new standard in the premium monitor market.

The company announced Wednesday that it reached the milestone about four years after starting mass production, following its industry-first commercialization of QD-OLED in late 2021. The achievement reflects an average annual growth rate of more than 320% over the period.

The latest milestone comes less than two years after shipments exceeded 1 million units in May 2024, underscoring rapidly growing global demand.

QD-OLED integrates quantum dots—nanometer-sized semiconductor particles—into display panels. Using a blue OLED light source filtered through a quantum dot emission layer, the technology delivers highly accurate red and green colors, offering superior color accuracy and brightness.

It also provides wider viewing angles and faster response times due to the light diffusion properties of quantum dots, resulting in sharper images with reduced motion blur compared with LCD panels.

According to market research firm Omdia, the share of self-emissive panels in the premium monitor market—defined as products priced above $330—is expected to grow from 22% in 2024 to 41% by 2026.

Samsung Display said it has partnered with about 20 global clients, including Dell, HP and Samsung Electronics, to launch more than 150 QD-OLED monitor models, expanding its market presence. The company accounted for approximately 75% of the self-emissive monitor market by shipment volume last year.

The company recently began supplying a new 34-inch 360Hz monitor designed to improve text readability. It has also applied its “Quantum Black™” technology—featuring a low-reflection, high-durability film that reduces light reflection by 20% and increases surface hardness to 3H—across its latest product lineup, enhancing contrast and immersion for content such as gaming.

Son Dong-il, executive vice president and head of Samsung Display’s large display business, said the company’s dominant market share reflects its competitive image quality and stable production capabilities.

“We will continue to lead changes in the monitor market with differentiated technologies and products,” he said.
