Paste magazine recognized NewJeans’ single “Ditto” as one of the Best Songs of the 2020s.
Recently, Paste unveiled its list of The 100 Best Songs of the 2020s So Far, placing “Ditto” from NewJeans’ album OMG at number 23. Notably, “Ditto” is the only K-pop entry among global pop icons like Billie Eilish, SZA, and The 1975.
Paste praised NewJeans and “Ditto,” stating, “When considering the current state of K-pop in the 2020s, no group has risen as rapidly as NewJeans, and ‘Ditto’ is one of its best tracks.” The magazine commented, “NewJeans boldly breaks away from the current K-pop trend of flashy EDM and overly sweet maximalism, offering a more groovy and elegant future.” They concluded, “‘Ditto’ perfectly showcases NewJeans’ position in the new genre they’re pioneering and their explosive star power.”
Released on December 19, 2022, “Ditto” features warm vocals and a cozy melody. This track helped NewJeans make a significant mark by entering the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Official Singles Chart just six months after its debut. In South Korea, “Ditto” set records on Melon, topping the daily chart for 99 consecutive days and the weekly chart for 14 weeks, ultimately securing the number one spot on the 2023 year-end chart.
In September, Paste also included NewJeans’ second EP, Get Up, in its list of the 100 Greatest EPs of All Time, ranking it 52nd. The magazine highlighted the EP: “This 12-minute, six-track record delivers a sophisticated and subtle sound that blends R&B and club vibes in a way not often utilized in K-pop before.” They noted NewJeans’ remarkable achievement of topping the Billboard 200 chart, adding, “With the release of this album, NewJeans once again reached new heights.”
After debuting, NewJeans has made history as the fastest K-pop group to top the Billboard 200. Additionally, they achieved the impressive feat of having all three title tracks from their album—”Super Shy,” “ETA,” and “Cool With You”—appear on the Hot 100 simultaneously.
