Korean national soccer team captain Son Heung Min (Tottenham) has recently revealed an incident from a match against China in November last year, during the 2026 FIFA World Cup Asian Second Round qualifiers. After scoring a goal, he had a tense exchange with Chinese striker Wu Lei (Shanghai SIPG).

According to Sina Sports on the 4th, Wu mentioned in an interview with CCTV that “a world-class player should not make such provocative gestures towards fans after scoring a goal,” referring to Son’s actions.

South Korea won 3-0 against China in a match held at the Universiade Sports Centre in Shenzhen, China, on November 21 last year, during the 2026 FIFA World Cup Asian Second Round qualifiers.

Son scored the opening goal with a penalty kick 11 minutes into the first half and then gestured for the Chinese fans, who were booing him, to be quiet by putting his index finger to his lips. This prompted Wu to approach Son and pull his arm down, expressing his discomfort.

At the time, it was unknown what exactly the two players talked about, but six months later, Wu’s interview with CCTV revealed the details.

Regardless of Wu’s intervention and the booing from Chinese fans, Son continued his outstanding performance, scoring another goal in the 45th minute of the first half and leading South Korea to a 3-0 victory.
