Meta has revealed its plan to deploy additional detection mechanisms for advertisements impersonating celebrities and to conduct campaigns to improve user awareness.

According to industry sources on the 8th, Meta released a statement on the 5th titled “Meta’s Response and Efforts Against Impersonation Ads.”

“We have invested over $20 billion in manpower and technology since 2016 to ensure the safety and security of our community, with over 40,000 individuals currently engaged in related tasks,” Meta stated, further explaining, “In the fourth quarter of 2023, we deleted a total of 6.91 billion fake accounts, including those associated with impersonation ads, from Facebook and Instagram.”

Meta has established criteria to identify impersonation, such as repetitive or significant changes in identity details, misleading profiles, use of stolen photos, and other account activity history.

Furthermore, Meta emphasized, “Activities such as investment scams promising high returns or promoting, encouraging, and facilitating such actions are strictly prohibited,” and added, “We are in communication with the Broadcasting and Communications Commission and judicial authorities to detect and prevent fraudulent activities on the platform and to prevent accounts attempting to evade our detection systems cleverly.”

Meta has implemented measures including legal action against deliberate evasion of ad review procedures, establishing models for detecting ads impersonating celebrities, blocking fake reviews and bait expressions, reducing exposure of Facebook groups and pages violating related policies, and prohibiting reach to other users until account authenticity is verified.

“We will continue to strive to find better methods to detect and block accounts that deceive users, steal their money or assets, or impersonate others,” Meta stated. Additionally, “We plan to conduct campaigns to prevent user harm in Asia-Pacific and Korea this year.”
