On the 16th, Daegu Mayor Hong Joon Pyo stated, “The essence of a fight is to sacrifice oneself to win the battle,” referencing a Korean idiom that means cutting one’s flesh to break the opponent’s bone.

The metaphoric meaning of the idiom is to sacrifice oneself to defeat an adversary.

Hong posted on his Facebook page that day, “Korean politics has always been confrontational since the beginning, and surviving in this setting requires enduring endless battles and injuries.”

He continued, “The Democratic Party is accustomed to this world, but our party members have been too busy surviving to fight, leading to a cowardly stance,” criticizing the People Power Party.

He added, “Now is not the time for that. Only warriors survive in this world. One may think they have hit rock bottom, but they must realize there is still a basement.”

Hong wrote, “We must let go of those who need to leave without regret, and those who remain must bond. The sun will rise again tomorrow.”
