A man in his 60s, drunk driving without a license and fleeing after refusing a breathalyzer test from the police, has been arrested and handed over to the prosecutor’s office.
On the 2nd, the Gyeonggi Uijeongbu Police Station announced that they had arrested and handed over a man in his 60s for refusing a breathalyzer test.
The man is accused of drunk driving on a road in Uijeongbu City around 10:07 p.m. on the 7th of last month.
At the time, the police that had been dispatched following a citizen’s report of a “suspected drunk driver” stopped the vehicle that the man was driving.
Upon inspecting the vehicle, the police determined that the man was drunk based on the smell of alcohol and his eyes without focus. Also, alcohol was detected by a non-contact alcohol detector.
While a police officer was getting a breathalyzer from the patrol car to request the man to take the test formally, the man suddenly accelerated and fled about 3.1 miles to Nowon-gu, Seoul. He abandoned his car and hid at an acquaintance’s house.
The police confirmed that the car was registered under a sole proprietorship by identifying the license plate number and placing the man, the business owner, as a suspect in the investigation.
As the police investigation closed in on him, the man voluntarily appeared at the police station about a week after the incident and admitted to drunk driving.
The man had a record of being punished twice for drunk driving within the last five years, and his license was revoked at the time of the incident.
Deeming the man as a habitual drunk driver, the police arrested him and seized the vehicle registered under the company name to prevent possible recidivism.
A police official stated, “We will deter recidivism through the strict enforcement of the law, including active arrest investigations and vehicle seizures against habitual drunk drivers.”
