On July 2, President Yoon Suk Yeol met with former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to discuss global politics, including the war in Ukraine, recent Russia-North Korea relations, and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

Yoon expressed his gratitude to Rice for facilitating a summit between Korean and Japanese leaders last November at Stanford University, discussing cooperation in future industries among the U.S., Japan, and South Korea.

Yoon highly praised Rice’s efforts during her tenure as National Security Advisor and Secretary of State to strengthen the U.S.-Korea alliance and resolve the North Korean nuclear issue. He also asked for continuous efforts toward North Korea’s denuclearization and the promotion of human rights in North Korea.

In response, Rice said, “I can feel that the U.S.-Korea alliance has become stronger than ever since Yoon took office,” and expressed her deep admiration for Yoon’s determination and will to improve Korea-Japan relations at last year’s Stanford summit.

Furthermore, as a member of the U.S. academic community, Rice promised to continue her efforts to foster consensus on the importance of U.S.-Korea relations with unwavering support in strengthening the U.S.-Korea alliance.
