On July 9, South Korean Minister of National Defense Shin Won Sik issued a stern warning to North Korea, stating, “Any reckless actions disrupting peace will only lead to the regime’s destruction.”

During his speech at the 2024 First Half Major Commanders’ Meeting held at the Ministry of National Defense building in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, Shin said, “North Korea is continuously advancing its nuclear and missile capabilities at this very moment.”

Shin pointed out, “North Korea has designated us as the primary enemy, continuously provoking with actions like balloon propaganda and GPS disruption. By signing a new treaty with Russia, it threatens the freedom and peace of not only South Korea but also the international community.”

He emphasized, “The only way to protect the peace of South Korea from North Korea’s threats is through strong power. We must keep in mind the historical lesson that retaliation is deterrence and deterrence is peace, based on our strong power.”

Shin cited the following achievements of the South Korean military in the first half of this year. The achievements include:

  • Establishing mental readiness and realistic training for soldiers
  • Strengthening the Korean-style three-axis system including independent surveillance and reconnaissance assets
  • Enhancing integrated extended deterrence with the United States through the Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG)

He also stated, “In the latter half of this year, we need to further promote the atmosphere of dedication to training and continue to improve the working culture. Only strong training can deter North Korea’s provocations, earn the trust of our citizens, and boost the morale of our soldiers.”

Shin emphasized, “From commanders to soldiers, combative thinking and action need to become habitual. The correct approach is to avoid unnecessary actions and to focus on operations and training that are essential in the field.”

He concluded his speech by stating, “I hope this meeting will serve as the gas pedal for our great counterattack to overcome the critical challenges we face.”
