Etc86% of French Say Olympics Opening Was a Hit—But Not Everyone Agrees

A recent survey among French citizens revealed that 86% of respondents rated the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics as a resounding success.

The Paris Olympics commenced its opening ceremony on the 26th (local time) under the slogan “Games Wide Open,” introducing a groundbreaking format. For the first time in Olympic history, athletes entered by boat on the Seine River, deviating from the traditional stadium entrance. This novel approach marked a significant departure from past ceremonies.

The event showcased a variety of performances celebrating French culture at landmarks along the Seine, providing ample entertainment for attendees.

IOC spokesperson Anne Descamps stated on the 29th that according to survey results, 86% of the French people expressed satisfaction, confirming the success of the opening ceremony.

However, despite internal acclaim, certain performances faced criticism globally.

One scene featured DJs, dancers, and men dressed in women’s clothing dancing on a long dining table, sparking criticism for parodying the Last Supper of Jesus and his disciples.

Descamps expressed regret, saying, “Clearly there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group,” and added, “We believe this ambition was achieved. If people have committed any offense, we are really sorry.

Moreover, during their opening ceremony, the announcer mistakenly introduced the South Korean team as North Korea, leading to further embarrassment.

In response, the IOC issued an apology on its official website and sent a letter of apology to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
