North Korean leader Kim Jong Un sent a congratulatory letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin on his 72nd birthday, emphasizing the strong ties between their nations. According to the state-run newspaper Rodong Sinmun, Kim expressed “heartfelt congratulations” in his message.

In his letter, Kim praised Putin, stating, “You have borne the heavy and sacred responsibility for the prosperity of Russia and the well-being of its people for a long time.” He highlighted Putin’s achievements in strengthening Russia, which has garnered the unwavering trust and support of the Russian people.

Kim also assessed the new treaty (comprehensive strategic partnership agreement) signed during their June summit, noting that it has transformed the traditional North Korea-Russia relationship into a robust alliance grounded in the shared ideals of sovereignty and justice, establishing a strategic relationship for the future.

He stated, “The continued meetings and camaraderie between us will further solidify the lasting framework of friendship and strategic cooperation between North Korea and Russia, which is now on a new path of comprehensive development.”

Notably, Kim referred to Putin as his most dear comrade at both the beginning and end of his letter. This contrasts with his more reserved tone in a September letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping, in which he omitted terms like cooperation.
