U.S. and South Korea Gear Up for Major Military Drills Amid North Korean Threats

EtcU.S. and South Korea Gear Up for Major Military Drills Amid North Korean Threats

As North Korea’s military threats against the South escalate, the South Korean military will conduct the 2024 National Defense Training from October 20 until November 8. The exercise aims to enhance joint operational capabilities and establish military readiness.

According to South Korea’s Joint Chief of Staff (JCS) on Friday, the National Defense Training is an annual large-scale outdoor maneuver exercise organized by the JCS. This year’s training will feature an expanded scale of participation, including personnel and equipment from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and joint forces, compared to last year.

The JCS also reported that U.S. forces stationed in South Korea will participate this time, further enhancing joint operational capabilities and interoperability.

They said, “Considering the recent patterns of warfare and anticipated enemy provocations and attacks, we will create realistic scenarios and enhance jointness and practicality by integrating forces across various domains, including land, sea, and air.”

“As North Korea escalates its provocative actions—such as launching trash balloons, revealing nuclear facilities, and issuing rhetorical threats against the South—our military aims to strengthen its combat capabilities and demonstrate unwavering readiness and determination through this National Defense Training,” they added.
