On Monday, the leadership of South Korea’s People Power Party (PPP) called on the Democratic Party to clarify its stance on North Korea’s dispatch of troops to Russia, among other issues. They expressed concerns that the Democratic Party’s growing criticism of the government’s response could be an attempt to destabilize the administration.
In a party leaders’ meeting that day, Representative Han Dong Hoon questioned, “What exactly is the Democratic Party’s stance on North Korea’s involvement in the war?”
Representative Han remarked, “The Democratic Party is directing its criticism at our government and the PPP concerning various aspects of North Korea’s participation. While it’s typical for an opposition party to do so, we are demanding a clear response from them on this issue.”
Floor leader Choo Kyung Ho criticized the opposition, stating, “Experts and nations worldwide are warning that the dangerous provocations by Kim Jong Un’s regime could lead to a serious security crisis. Meanwhile, the opposition party is shifting the blame onto the South Korean government and appears to be using the situation to push for the administration’s resignation.”
Choo questioned, “Is this even a South Korean political party?” and asserted, “The Democratic Party’s underlying aim is the impeachment of the president, disguised as a resolution to condemn Kim Jong Un.”
Supreme Council member Kim Jae Won stated, “The opposition is even alleging that our government is laying the groundwork to deploy troops to Ukraine, raising doubts. Despite the gravity of the situation, it seems that the Democratic Party may be siding with North Korea and Kim Jong Un.”
Another Supreme Council member, Kim Min Jeon, also criticized Democratic Party Leader Lee Jae Myung’s recent social media post, stating, “I oppose submissive diplomacy that entrusts the nation’s fate to other countries. I oppose the war.” Kim responded, “I agree wholeheartedly, but the direction seems misplaced. It’s North Korea, not our government, that is sending its young citizens into a war zone in exchange for military technology.”
