North Korea has issued heavy snow warnings for Monday and Tuesday, forecasting up to 100 cm of snowfall in some areas, including the Hamgyong provinces.

In a Sunday evening broadcast, Korean Central Television (KCTV) reported, “Heavy snow warnings are in effect from Monday to Tuesday for various areas of South and North Hamgyong provinces, including Dancheon and Oryang, as well as parts of Yanggang Province, such as Daegam. These regions are expected to receive 30–70 cm of snow, accompanied by heavy snowfall.”

Specifically, localized areas such as Sinhung and Myeongcheon in South and North Hamgyong provinces are expected to receive 70–100 cm of snowfall, while regions in South Hwanghae Province, including Taetan, are forecasted to receive 30–40 cm of snow, which will be accompanied by heavy snowfall.

Authorities urged precautions to prevent building-related accidents caused by snow. The broadcast explained, “The weight of snow varies depending on temperature and relative humidity. Generally, 1 cm of snow per square meter weighs about 1 kg. For example, 40 cm of snow covering 100 square meters would weigh approximately 4 tons.”

They also advised removing accumulated snow from temporary structures or greenhouses in advance to prevent damage. They also stressed the importance of implementing thorough safety measures in sectors such as electricity and transportation.

Strong winds were also forecasted. KCTV stated, “A strong wind warning is in effect from Monday afternoon to Tuesday night. The west coast, Dancheon, Oryang, and other areas in South and North Hamgyong provinces and Rason City are expected to experience strong winds of 10–15 m/s. Localized areas in South Hwanghae Province are forecasted to see even stronger winds of 15–20 m/s.” The broadcast concluded by emphasizing that “strict measures are required in construction and other sectors of the national economy.”
