On Monday, South Korea’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang Insun met with UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed during her visit to New York for a United Nations Security Council meeting. The two officials discussed strengthening multilateralism centered around the UN and issues related to North Korea.

According to the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, Vice Minister Kang emphasized the importance of enhancing UN-centered multilateralism to address the international community’s complex challenges today. She underscored South Korea’s commitment to cooperating with the UN to ensure the effective functioning of multilateralism.

Notably, Vice Minister Kang highlighted that this year marks both the 80th anniversary of the UN’s establishment and the division of Korea. She urged the UN to continue issuing strong condemnation messages against violations of Security Council resolutions, such as the illegal cooperation between North Korea and Russia.

In response, Deputy Secretary-General Mohammed commended South Korea for its expanding contributions and leadership in areas such as international peace and security and the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He called for close cooperation in restoring multilateralism.

On the same day, Vice Minister Kang also met with Haoliang Xu, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Associate Administrator, to discuss ways to advance South Korea-UNDP cooperation.
