EtcDisney+ Sets the Stage for a Spy Thriller with 'Tempest'

Disney+ series Tempest brings together Gianna Jun and Gang Dong Won.

On May 29, Disney+ announced the production of a new drama, Tempest. The series is about Moon Ju (Gianna Jun), a diplomat and former U.S. ambassador who has gained international renown, and San Ho (Gang Dong Won), a special agent of unknown nationality who is chasing the truth hidden behind a big incident.

Moon Ju is a character who has gained substantial trust in the international community through her insightful judgments and actions as a diplomat and U.S. ambassador. She discovers that there is political activity surrounding North and South Korea behind an assassination case.

San Ho is a mysterious character whose nationality and past are veiled. He is a former ace among international mercenaries. Gang’s appearance in Tempest marks his return to the small screen after 20 years since the drama Magic aired in 2004. Furthermore, Gang is expected to take on a new challenge by participating in the production of Tempest, raising expectations.

In addition to the unexpected casting, the meeting of a well-made production team also catches the eye. The script is written by Jeong Seo Kyeong, a long-time script partner of director Park Chan Wook, who has shown excellent storytelling through films like The Decision to Break Up, The Handmaiden, Thirst, Believer, and dramas such as Little Women, and Mother.

The main film director is handled by Kim Hee Won, who has shown delicate yet heavy direction through dramas such as Queen of Tears, Little Women, and Vincenzo. The collab between writer Jeong and director Kim, following their teamwork in Little Women, promises to deliver another well-made production. Additionally, director Heo Myeong Haeng of The Roundup: Punishment will be participating as a co-director. Heo’s participation is opening a new chapter in the action genre from his experience as a representative martial arts director in Korea, adding anticipation for a distinctive tempest action style and worldview.

The series is expected to be released in 2025.
