The Miami Marlins have released Tim Anderson, who previously won the American League (AL) batting championship.

The Miami Marlins announced on Tuesday that they have placed veteran shortstop Anderson on the DFA (Designated For Assignment) list. In his place, they called up minor leaguer Xavier Edwards.

If a player becomes a DFA, they will be released as a free agent (FA) unless another club announces its intention to recruit them.

Anderson, who made his Major League debut in a Chicago White Sox uniform in 2016, has played in a total of 960 games, boasting a batting average of .278 with 98 home runs, 347 RBIs, and 121 stolen bases.

In 2019, he led the AL in batting with an average of .335. He was selected for the All-Star game twice (2021 and 2022) and also represented the U.S. national team at the World Baseball Classic (WBC) held in March 2023.

Anderson’s performance declined after he suffered a finger injury in August 2022.

In 2023, he only batted .245 with 1 home run and 25 RBIs. After the 2023 season, he became a free agent but was unable to secure a team.

Anderson signed a short-term contract with Miami in February for $5 million over one year. However, this season, he only managed a .214 batting average with 50 hits, 0 home runs, and 9 RBIs in 65 games.
