EtcFAO Lists North Korea Among 45 Nations Desperately Needing Food Aid

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has identified North Korea as a country needing external food aid for the 18th consecutive year.

On the 6th, Voice of America cited the FAO’s recently published “Crop Prospects and Food Situation Triannual Global Report” and reported that North Korea was classified as a country with inadequate access to food and was included in the list of 45 countries requiring external food aid.

The report states that North Korea’s food security situation is expected to remain vulnerable amidst the sluggish economic growth. They were particularly forecasting a vulnerable food security situation during the lean season from May to August.

The report is published three times a year. North Korea has been on its list since the FAO began this survey in 2007.
