LG Innotek is joining forces with Intel Corporation (Intel) to expand its artificial intelligence (AI) vision inspection capabilities. The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to formalize this partnership.

This Tuesday, LG Innotek announced its plan to implement Intel’s Integrated Graphics Processing Unit (i-GPU) based AI vision inspection solution across all of its production processes. The i-GPU, embedded within the Central Processing Unit (CPU), enables AI functionality without the need for costly external GPUs or additional PC installations.

Vision inspection involves examining product appearance during manufacturing to detect any abnormalities. This task, traditionally performed by humans, is increasingly being automated with cameras and enhanced by AI technology. The manufacturing sector, in particular, is actively adopting this approach to reduce product defect rates across various production processes.

LG Innotek expects that by leveraging Intel’s AI solution to develop an AI training model, they can boost the accuracy of vision inspection judgments to nearly 100%. The company also anticipates reducing AI training time by up to 1.5 times.

LG Innotek first implemented Intel’s AI vision inspection solution in its mobile camera module production line last year. This year, the company plans to gradually expand its use to other production lines, including the Gumi Factory 4, which specializes in FC-BGA (flip-chip ball grid array) production. Through the establishment of smart factories, LG Innotek aims to enhance its cost competitiveness.

Looking ahead, the two companies will strengthen their collaboration to further enhance and intelligentize production processes.

Lee Sang-seok, head of LG Innotek’s Production Innovation Center, stated that their partnership with Intel has accelerated their smart factory initiatives. They will continue to strengthen their collaboration with Intel to create differentiated customer value through production innovation.
