Google announced on Wednesday that it will integrate the AI video generation model Veo 2 into its Gemini app, offering a video creation service for paid subscribers.

This move mirrors OpenAI’s video generation model Sora and is expected to intensify competition in AI video generation technology.

Veo 2 can generate 8-second videos in 720p resolution using only text prompts.

A Google spokesperson explained that Veo 2 realistically renders physical movements from the real world, noting that the feature is exclusive to Gemini Advanced subscribers.

These subscribers can access Veo 2 through a dropdown menu in the Gemini app or website to create videos.

Users can download the generated videos as MP4 files and share them directly to social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube.

All videos created with Veo 2 will include a SynthID watermark to indicate their AI-generated nature.

Google has also integrated Veo 2 with Whisk, another experimental AI feature. Developed by Google Labs, Whisk generates images based on text and visual examples.

The Google spokesperson elaborated that the users can now transform Whisk-created images into 8-second videos using Veo 2, effectively adding motion to still images.

This integration of Veo 2 into Google’s Gemini app is widely seen as a strategic response to OpenAI’s February launch of Sora. In the wake of Sora’s debut, tech giants like Meta and Microsoft have ramped up their efforts in AI video generation technology.
