Amazon has unveiled its new logistics robot, Vulcan. According to a report on Wednesday by CNBC, this cutting-edge robot possesses tactile capabilities, allowing it to perform tasks previously reserved for human workers.

Vulcan employs AI-based sensors to detect objects and apply precise pressure and torque for manipulation. This advanced technology enables it to handle 75% of the one million items in Amazon’s Spokane warehouse. Unlike existing robots that rely on cameras for detection and suction for gripping, which limits their versatility, Vulcan can execute more intricate tasks with greater precision.

The robot boasts an impressive 20-hour daily operational capacity and works at nearly the same pace as human employees. It can efficiently process items weighing up to 3.6 kg (8 pounds).

Despite its capabilities, Vulcan is not designed for complete automation. Instead of replacing human workers, it’s expected to create new high-skilled job opportunities. One of its primary objectives is to manage 100% of the loading of items on top shelves, areas that are typically challenging for human workers to access safely.
