Google has rolled out major security enhancements for Android, introducing cutting-edge technology to thwart voice phishing and message scams.

On Tuesday, PhoneArena reported that Android’s latest call security system now leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to detect and alert users to voice phishing attempts in real-time. The system springs into action if a user receives a call from an unknown number while Google Play Protect is disabled, or if they’re prompted to install unfamiliar apps. It will block the action or issue an immediate warning in such cases. Additionally, when screen sharing is activated during a call, the system will remind users to terminate the share once the call ends.

Google’s messaging app has also significantly upgraded its AI-powered fraud detection capabilities. It can more accurately identify various scams, including false toll charges, cryptocurrency fraud, and bogus tech support schemes. To safeguard user privacy, all message scanning occurs locally on the device.

In the United Kingdom, popular banking apps such as Monzo, NatWest, and Revolut are set to implement a feature that instantly alerts users when they receive calls from unrecognized numbers while using these apps. Users can end calls or halt screen sharing with a single tap. Google believes these enhancements will provide crucial protection as financial scams grow increasingly sophisticated.

An upcoming feature called Key Verifier is also in the pipeline. This tool will allow users to easily verify the identity of other people’s contacts through the Google Contacts app, helping to prevent number spoofing scams like SIM swapping.

Google’s ongoing commitment to strengthening Android’s security features, particularly through AI-powered real-time detection systems, aims to create a robust defense against voice phishing and message scams. This latest update is expected to combat financial fraud and significantly elevate overall mobile security.
