Google is enhancing user authentication and security by introducing an automatic password change feature in its Chrome browser. The company recently announced via its official blog that Chrome users can now easily update compromised passwords with just a few clicks.
TechRadar reported that Chrome’s new feature will improve user security while simplifying the otherwise cumbersome process of updating login credentials. The Chrome development team explained that the automatic password change feature is designed to help users respond swiftly and effortlessly when their account credentials are compromised. When Chrome identifies a breached password, Google Password Manager automatically generates and updates it with a strong, secure replacement.
While passwords remain the most common form of user authentication, they are also one of the most vulnerable. Common issues include using weak or easily guessed passwords, sharing passwords with friends or family, and insecure storage methods that make them easy targets for hackers. Despite the growing adoption of alternatives like passkeys, biometric authentication, and physical security keys, Google maintains that “passwords are still the most widely used authentication method worldwide” and continues efforts to improve their security.
In addition to this update, Google is expected to introduce further security measures such as integrated sign-in methods, enhanced identity verification, and improved session protections. The automatic password change feature will only work on supported websites, but it is positioned to become a vital tool for boosting user security.
