Tech titans in artificial intelligence and design have joined forces. OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, has acquired io, the AI device startup founded by Jony Ive, signaling a bold move into AI hardware development. However, given the industry’s history of similar ventures falling short, all eyes are on how this powerhouse duo plans to set itself apart.

TechRadar highlighted key pitfalls the OpenAI-io collaboration must sidestep to avoid the fate of predecessors like the Humane AI Pin and Rabbit R1, which once gained traction as the first dedicated AI hardware.

First and foremost, AI devices without screens are unlikely to replace smartphones. The Humane AI Pin’s attempt to replace smartphones with voice commands and a laser interface stumbled due to its inability to share visual information.

Pricing strategy will be critical. With iPhone creator Jony Ive at the helm, expectations of a premium product are high. However, if the new AI device is priced on par with high-end smartphones, it could face significant consumer resistance in an already saturated market.

The user experience must be seamless from start to finish. This entails developing a natural, intuitive AI voice interface and addressing the persistent challenge of AI hallucinations—instances where AI models generate incorrect or nonsensical responses. Moreover, unlike the Humane AI Pin, which required a separate data plan, the new device should function without additional data fees to enhance its appeal and accessibility.
