Carl Pei, co-founder of Nothing, has taken a swipe at Apple, claiming the tech giant has lost its creative edge. Pei argues that the future of smartphones lies in a single, all-encompassing app that will handle every function.

According to 9to5Mac on Tuesday, Pei recently stated in an interview with Wired that Apple was very innovative during the iPod era and early iPhone days, and that their work truly inspired him. However, he didn’t mince words about the company’s current state, pointing out that today’s Apple has become mundane. Pei was particularly critical of Apple’s AI efforts, declaring the company’s artificial intelligence system a failure.

Despite his criticism of Apple, Pei has expressed his firm belief in AI’s potential, stating that he’s convinced that smartphones will become the primary gateway to AI. Looking ahead, Pei predicted that individual apps will not be needed within the next 7 to 10 years, and the operating system itself will evolve into a single, all-encompassing app that handles every function.

Industry analysts, however, are skeptical of Pei’s vision. While acknowledging that AI may indeed replace some apps as it grows more sophisticated, they argue that the idea of a single AI supplanting all apps is far-fetched.
