This year has seen a remarkable surge in international visitors, highlighting the growing prominence of Korean medical devices. On Thursday, the entrance to the Korea International Medical & Hospital Equipment Show (KIMES 2026) exhibition hall at the Convention & Exhibition Center (COEX) in Seoul was abuzz with a multilingual chorus of Korean, English, and Chinese. International buyers were easily spotted navigating the venue, seeking guidance or exploring various booths.

Crowds flocked to exhibits showcasing artificial intelligence (AI) diagnostics, digital healthcare solutions, and cutting-edge ultrasound equipment. Foreign buyers eagerly engaged with products, conducting hands-on trials and in-depth consultations with company representatives. Some popular booths even experienced extended wait times due to prolonged discussions.

Domestic hospital officials also turned out in greater numbers this year. Industry insiders noted that many attendees went beyond casual observation, thoroughly examining equipment and seriously considering adoption. A representative from one participating company remarked that they’re seeing hospital officials test equipment and move directly to contract negotiations. There’s a clear uptick in visits translating to actual purchases.

In a significant development, Health and Welfare Minister Jeong Eun-kyeong toured the exhibition floor after delivering the opening ceremony address. Industry experts interpreted this high-level visit as a strong signal of increased government interest and support for the Korean healthcare industry.

An industry insider observed that last year, it had a vice minister in attendance. This year, the minister herself toured the booths, demonstrating heightened government engagement. It’s clear that KIMES needs to continue its upward trajectory.

KIMES, now in its 41st year, has been a cornerstone of the domestic medical device and hospital equipment industry since its inception in 1980. This year’s event drew 1,490 companies from 41 countries, including 846 domestic and 644 international firms, showcasing approximately 39,000 products.

The exhibition emphasized real-world applications of artificial intelligence in diagnosis and treatment, leveraging Korea’s robust information technology (IT) infrastructure. Special sections, including Inspire Digital Healthcare and Beauty and Derma Seoul, added depth to the event’s offerings.

With the influx of international buyers and domestic healthcare professionals, industry veterans note a palpable shift in the exhibition’s global standing. One long-time participant reflected that they’ve been attending KIMES since its early days, and it’s remarkable to witness its growing influence year after year.
