Spinal implant company L&K Biomed is partnering with internationally recognized cervical spine surgery expert Dr. K. Daniel Liu to develop next-generation cervical spine implants.
Under the collaboration, L&K Biomed will work with Dr. Liu on the development of next-generation cervical spinal fixation devices and implants.
The partnership is designed to combine Dr. Liu’s extensive clinical experience with L&K Biomed’s expertise in spinal implant design and manufacturing, allowing the company to incorporate the needs of actual surgical settings into its product development process.
Dr. Liu is a spine surgeon specializing in cervical spine disorders. He is currently a professor of orthopedic surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine in the United States and practices at the Och Spine Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. He has also served as president of the Cervical Spine Research Society (CSRS) and has continued to conduct research and perform surgery in the cervical spine field.
Dr. Liu has published more than 300 peer-reviewed papers on cervical spine-related topics and has served as principal investigator on more than 35 spine research projects. His extensive clinical and research experience has made him a prominent figure in cervical spine surgery, with spine surgeons from around the world training with him to learn his surgical techniques.
Dr. Liu has also expressed particular interest in the design and surgical usability of L&K Biomed’s cervical product BluEX-C. The company plans to incorporate his clinical experience to improve its existing products while accelerating development of next-generation cervical spine solutions.
L&K Biomed’s BluEX Cervical Expandable Cage System received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance in May. The 510(k) pathway is a regulatory process used to demonstrate that a medical device is substantially equivalent in safety and effectiveness to a legally marketed device in the United States.
The collaboration will also support L&K Biomed’s New Cervical Project, through which the company plans to gradually expand its product portfolio—from cervical plate systems to expandable cages—to establish a comprehensive range of cervical spine implants.
The company plans to focus particularly on next-generation implants used in corpectomy, a surgical procedure that involves removing part of a vertebral body to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves.
Dr. Liu said, “Together with L&K Biomed, we will develop products, including cervical corpectomy solutions, that improve surgical convenience and safety and provide tangible value to both medical professionals and patients.”
