Lunit announced on Monday that its artificial intelligence (AI) powered mammography analysis solution, Lunit Insight MMG, will be implemented for breast cancer screening across the entire Stockholm region in Sweden.
This contract marks a significant milestone, as it expands Lunit’s AI technology from a clinical study at a single hospital five years ago to a region-wide screening program.
Lunit is partnering with Sectra, a Swedish medical imaging firm, for this rollout. The solution will be deployed in three hospitals specializing in breast cancer screening in Stockholm: Capio St. Göran Hospital, Sweden’s largest private hospital; Karolinska University Hospital, ranked 4th globally by Newsweek in 2026; and Södersjukhuset, a major Stockholm medical center.
In Europe, the standard for breast cancer screening has been double reading by two radiologists. Now, in Stockholm, Lunit Insight MMG will independently perform the role of one of these readers.
This achievement builds on years of validation and use of Lunit’s AI at St. Göran Hospital, starting with the groundbreaking ScreenTrustCAD study – the first prospective trial of AI in breast cancer screening.
Researchers from the Karolinska Institute and St. Göran Hospital evaluated Lunit’s AI using data from about 55,000 women screened for breast cancer between April 2021 and June 2022.
The study found that AI paired with one radiologist detected more cancers than two radiologists reading independently. These findings were presented at RSNA 2022 and later published in The Lancet Digital Health, garnering significant attention.
Following these results, St. Göran Hospital contracted with Lunit in 2023, replacing one radiologist with Lunit Insight MMG in their double reading process. This marked the world’s first integration of AI as an independent reader in clinical practice. The hospital has since used Lunit’s AI to interpret about 200,000 cases over three years, maintaining AI readings even while upgrading mammography equipment.
Lunit Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Seo Beom-seok stated that the Stockholm implementation demonstrates how robust clinical evidence can drive adoption not just in individual hospitals, but across entire healthcare systems. Stockholm is set to become a model for how AI can create more effective and sustainable cancer screening programs throughout Europe.
