FIFA Controversy: Should Pulisic’s Red Card Suspension Be Lifted for World Cup?

LifestyleFIFA Controversy: Should Pulisic's Red Card Suspension Be Lifted for World Cup?

U.S. soccer star Folarin Balogun (25), at the center of a red card suspension controversy, acknowledged the uproar surrounding his case. It’s natural for there to be controversy when a decision is overturned, he stated.

On Tuesday, Balogun took the field for the U.S. in their Round of 16 clash against Belgium at Seattle Stadium in Washington state. Despite his presence, the Americans suffered a crushing 4-1 defeat in the 2026 International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) North America World Cup.

Balogun’s participation drew global attention. He had previously received a red card for a reckless tackle on an opponent’s ankle during the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Normally, this would have sidelined him for the Round of 16. However, in a surprising move, FIFA announced a one-year suspension of Balogun’s ban just before kickoff.

The decision sparked outrage, especially after reports emerged that President Donald Trump had intervened by speaking with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Despite the controversy, the U.S. started Balogun. The forward, however, failed to make an impact and was substituted in stoppage time, watching helplessly as his team crashed out of the tournament.

In a post-match interview, Balogun addressed the situation. The controversy is understandable given the circumstances, he said. He accepted the referee’s decision when he got the red card, and he simply accepted FIFA’s ruling that he could play.

He added that he wasn’t involved in the process at all. It had nothing to do with him personally. His job was simply to go out there and perform as a player.

Balogun expressed disappointment about the team’s elimination, separate from the controversy surrounding his participation.

It didn’t give the home fans much to cheer about today, he lamented. That’s the most disappointing and heartbreaking part of it all.
