Spain’s World Cup Victory: How They Defeated Argentina and Revived Their Football Legacy

LifestyleSpain's World Cup Victory: How They Defeated Argentina and Revived Their Football Legacy

Twelve years after conquering Europe, Spain has now claimed global supremacy. The era of the Invincible Armada, once thought to have ended, has been resurrected after a 16-year hiatus.

On July 19, Spain clinched a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Argentina in extra time during the 2026 International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) World Cup final. The match took place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

This triumph marks Spain’s second World Cup title, coming 16 years after their inaugural victory in South Africa in 2010.

Having secured the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) European Championship just two years ago, Spain has now added the World Cup to their trophy cabinet.

In an unprecedented feat, Spain remained undefeated throughout all eight matches of the tournament, extending their unbeaten streak in international play to a record-breaking 38 games (29 wins, 9 draws).

Throughout the competition, Spain showcased a masterclass in tactical organization and defensive solidity. Rodri anchored the midfield, not only stifling opposition attacks but also serving as the catalyst for swift counterattacks. This midfield dominance was key to Spain’s impressive defensive record, conceding just one goal across eight matches.

This victory carries extra significance as it marks Spain’s resurgence to the pinnacle of world soccer after a period of decline. Following their golden era of tiki-taka football, which brought them success in Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup, and Euro 2012, Spain had experienced a downturn in form.

Their struggles were evident in recent World Cups, with a group stage exit in Brazil 2014 and round of 16 eliminations in Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022.

In response to these setbacks, Spain turned to Luis de la Fuente, who had achieved success with Spain’s youth teams. De la Fuente implemented sweeping changes to rejuvenate the squad.

Moving away from the tiki-taka style, he introduced a more dynamic approach featuring quick transitions, high-pressure defense, and effective use of wide areas. By integrating young talents he had nurtured in the youth setup, De la Fuente successfully orchestrated a generational shift that culminated in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, their first in 12 years.

Spain’s dominance continued into this World Cup. Despite underwhelming performances from highly-touted wingers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, the team’s rock-solid midfield and rapid attacking transitions proved decisive. Super-subs like Ferran Torres, who netted the winning goal in the final, and Mikel Merino made crucial impacts off the bench.

This victory cements Spain’s status as the next powerhouse in global soccer. The future looks bright with 19-year-olds Yamal, who spearheaded Spain’s attack, and Pau Cubarsí, named the tournament’s Best Young Player. With key players like Pedri and Gavi still in their early twenties, this World Cup triumph could mark the beginning of a new Spanish dynasty.
