Chelsea, a club in the English Premier League (EPL), has signed midfielder Morgan Rogers (23) for a record transfer fee for a British player.
Chelsea and Aston Villa officially announced the completion of Rogers’ transfer on Wednesday. His contract extends until 2033.
While the transfer fee wasn’t disclosed, UK media reports suggest Chelsea paid 117 million GBP (approximately 156.5 million USD), setting a new record for a British player.
This surpasses Manchester City’s recent 116 million GBP (about 155 million USD) acquisition of Elliott Anderson from Nottingham Forest earlier this month.
Chelsea’s previous record was 115 million GBP (around 154 million USD) paid to Brighton & Hove Albion for Moisés Caicedo in 2023.
The EPL’s highest transfer fee remains 125 million GBP (approximately 167 million USD), which Liverpool paid Newcastle for Alexander Isak last year.
Rogers is versatile, capable of playing as both a winger and an attacking midfielder. Since joining Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in 2024, he’s netted 31 goals in 125 appearances.
His standout 2025-26 season saw him rack up 14 goals and 12 assists in 55 matches, significantly boosting his market value.
Rogers’ club performances earned him a spot on England’s national team for the 2026 International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) World Cup in North America. He featured in seven matches, helping England secure a third-place finish.
