The latest installment, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, hitting theaters on July 29, delves into the aftermath of that sacrifice. The core narrative follows Peter Parker, forgotten even by his loved ones, as he continues his solitary heroic journey and evolves into a true adult.
Neither MJ (Zendaya) nor Ned (Jacob Batalon) remember Peter Parker anymore. He exists solely as New York’s masked hero, Spider-Man, erased from their memories. Swallowing his grief over losing Aunt May, Peter secretly longs for his girlfriend and best friend while embracing the mantra that with great power comes great responsibility, enduring a lonely existence.
Peter’s world is upended when a mysterious telepath emerges, and an enigmatic phenomenon that transcends consciousness engulfs New York City. Simultaneously, Peter’s body undergoes a spider DNA mutation. His senses become razor-sharp, and his abilities spiral out of control. Though more powerful than ever, he realizes he’s become a force that’s increasingly difficult to manage.
This film transcends the typical superhero physical transformation narrative. It skillfully weaves together themes of familial loss, the compulsion to shoulder a hero’s responsibilities, and the journey of self-discovery, seamlessly interspersed with high-octane action sequences. The DNA mutation evolves from a power to be suppressed into a change that must be embraced, naturally leading to a profound awakening in the film’s latter half.
The emotional landscape is richer and more nuanced than in previous installments. Peter’s wistful glances at the memory-wiped MJ tug at the heartstrings, underscoring the weight of his sacrifice. A pivotal moment arrives when Peter, asked if he’s Peter or Spider-Man, responds with a resolute “I’m both,” signifying his acceptance of his dual identities.
The new antagonist breaks the mold of previous Spider-Man villains. Jin (Sadie Sink), a telepath, commits brutal acts but is driven by the tragedy of losing her family. The moments where Peter and Jin confront each other’s trauma resonate beyond the typical hero-villain dynamic, leaving a lasting impact.
Action sequences remain the film’s tour de force. The web-slinging between skyscrapers is breathtakingly kinetic. Scenes utilizing the elasticity of spider silk for both traversal and combat, coupled with aerial acrobatics above New York’s skyline, deliver the unique, three-dimensional thrill that only Spider-Man can provide.
Tom Holland’s performance has matured significantly throughout the series. Gone is the awkward, playful boy, replaced by a young man grappling with loss and responsibility. This iteration marks the most mature Peter Parker we’ve seen to date.
However, the film isn’t without its flaws. The repetitive exploration of Peter’s internal struggle between his human and heroic identities, coupled with the constant emphasis on heroic duty, occasionally drags the pacing. The memory-wiped MJ and Ned subplot feels more like treading water than expanding their relationships. Jin, initially intriguing, ultimately falls short in presence and menace, leading to a slight dip in tension during the latter half. The 144-minute runtime feels even longer as a result.
