On Thursday, the day of the National Assembly’s hearing on the South Korean soccer team’s World Cup disappointment, Son Heung-min, captain of the Major League Soccer (MLS) All-Star team, led his squad to victory with a brace in just 35 minutes of play.
The match took place at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Son netted twice in the first half to propel the MLS All-Stars to a 4-3 win over the Liga MX All-Stars.
Son’s two-goal performance, unique in the game, earned him Most Valuable Player honors.
Making his All-Star debut as captain and starting forward, Son seized an opportunity on the left flank in the 20th minute. With his team trailing 1-0, he latched onto a through ball from Carles Gil and rifled home the equalizer.
This strike extended Son’s scoring streak to four consecutive matches, building on his three-game run with his club team.
Just three minutes later, Son struck again. Gil broke down the right side and delivered a cross, which Son met with a clinical half-volley to put the MLS team ahead.
Son continued to pose a threat up front until he was subbed off for Guilherme in the 35th minute, concluding his All-Star appearance.
The MLS All-Stars maintained their offensive pressure despite numerous substitutions. They extended their lead to two goals when Philip Zinckernagel found the net in the 42nd minute.
Liga MX fought back, with Salomón Rondón pulling one back in the 55th minute. However, the MLS side quickly responded, as Evander da Silva Ferreira restored the two-goal cushion just three minutes later.
Despite a late consolation goal in stoppage time, Liga MX ran out of time to complete their comeback.
