The San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball extended their winning streak to two games. San Diego infielder Song Seong-mun entered the game as a defensive replacement in the late innings.
On Friday, San Diego defeated the Colorado Rockies 9-2 in an away game at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado.
With this two-game winning streak, San Diego maintained second place in the National League West with a season record of 84 wins and 69 losses.
Although the gap with the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers (93-60) remained at nine games, the Padres held onto third place in the National League wild-card race.
In Major League Baseball, in addition to the six division champions, teams finishing second or lower can also qualify for the wild card based on their winning percentage. Three teams from each of the American League and National League advance to the postseason as wild cards.
San Diego seized the momentum with a big inning in the top of the second. After leading off with a solo home run by Xander Bogaerts to tie the game at 1-1, San Diego took the lead with a two-run batted in (RBI) single by Dustin Harris with one out and the bases loaded.
They then added a run on a sacrifice fly by Manny Machado, followed by a two-RBI triple by Jackson Merrill and a one-RBI triple by Bogaerts, extending their lead to 7-1.
In the top of the fifth inning, Samad Taylor’s RBI double and Harris’s RBI single pushed the lead to 9-1, effectively sealing the victory early.
Starting pitcher Michael King, backed by ample run support, held the opposition to two runs over six innings.
Song Seong-mun entered the game as a pinch-runner at third base in the top of the 8th inning and pitched two innings. He did not come up to bat.
