Luis de la Fuente, who guided Spain to victory in the 2026 International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) World Cup in North America, will continue to lead the national team until 2032.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on Monday that its board unanimously approved an extension of de la Fuente’s contract through 2032.
This contract renewal comes on the heels of Spain’s triumph in the 2026 World Cup. De la Fuente is now set to manage the national team through the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Euro 2028 and 2032, as well as the 2030 World Cup.
De la Fuente’s journey with the Spanish national setup began in May 2013 when he took charge of the Under-19 team. He subsequently managed various age-group teams before his appointment as the senior team’s head coach in December 2022.
RFEF President Rafael Lusan emphasized the federation’s commitment to stability and trust. This decision reflects the confidence in de la Fuente and his vision, Lusan stated. It aims to collaboratively prepare for major tournaments in the coming years.
Lusan further praised de la Fuente’s track record, noting that he’s the most successful coach in the history of the Spanish national team. After 14 years with the federation, he’s earned a long-term future with the RFEF.
Under de la Fuente’s leadership, Spain has secured victories in the World Cup, European Championship, and UEFA Nations League.
The RFEF is planning a formal contract extension ceremony, which will be attended by de la Fuente and key figures from Spanish soccer.
In the immediate future, Spain will compete in the UEFA Nations League later this month and in early October, facing tough competition from England, Croatia, and the Czech Republic.
