Lionel Messi (39) capped off his illustrious international career with a stellar performance in his farewell match, leading Argentina to a commanding victory with a goal and two assists.

The friendly against Benin took place at Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires on Wednesday, where Messi orchestrated a 3-0 triumph for the home side.

Starting in his final appearance for La Albiceleste, Messi wasted no time making an impact. Just three minutes into the second half, he delivered a pinpoint corner kick that Nicolas Otamendi headed home for the opener.

Messi’s playmaking prowess was on full display again in the 61st minute when he set up Nico Paz for a stunning long-range strike. Paz, tipped as Argentina’s next number 10, unleashed a fierce left-footed shot after receiving Messi’s pass to double the lead.

Having already notched two assists, Messi put the finishing touch on his farewell by converting a penalty in the 71st minute, bringing the curtain down on his international career in style.

Since his debut against Hungary in August 2005, Messi has amassed an incredible 126 goals in 208 appearances for Argentina. This tally stands as both the all-time scoring record for his country and for any South American player in international soccer.

After years of near-misses, Messi finally tasted glory with Argentina by clinching the 2021 Copa América, organized by CONMEBOL.

He then cemented his legacy by leading Argentina to victory in the 2022 International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) World Cup in Qatar, before adding another Copa América title in 2024.

To honor their departing icon, the Argentine Football Association produced special commemorative jerseys for the occasion. The packed stadium erupted in a standing ovation during the 10th minute, a nod to Messi’s iconic number 10 shirt. Even the Benin players paused to join in the applause, recognizing the magnitude of the moment.

Following the final whistle, Messi collected mementos including the match ball and the referee’s cards. Having maintained his composure throughout the game, the Argentine superstar finally allowed his emotions to show during the farewell ceremony, bidding an emotional goodbye to his adoring fans.
