Tottenham Hotspur Breaks Winless Streak: How They Defeated Coventry City 3-1

LifestyleTottenham Hotspur Breaks Winless Streak: How They Defeated Coventry City 3-1

Tottenham Hotspur has finally broken their winless streak. After failing to secure a victory in their first six matches of the season, which saw them plummet to the bottom of the English Premier League (EPL) table, Spurs finally notched their first win against newly-promoted Coventry City.

The long-awaited triumph came on Tuesday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, where the home side defeated Coventry 3-1 in the seventh round of the 2026-27 EPL season.

Having endured a dismal start with three draws and three losses in their opening six fixtures, Tottenham at last shook off their frustrating winless run in their seventh outing.

In an unwanted record, Spurs became the last of the 92 clubs across England’s top four divisions to record their first win of the season.

The victory lifts Tottenham out of the relegation zone and up to 16th place, with six points from one win, three draws, and three losses.

After narrowly avoiding relegation in the past two seasons by finishing 17th, Tottenham splashed out 308 million GBP (about 410.7 million USD) on new signings this summer in hopes of a resurgence.

However, their efforts were initially hampered by a severe goal drought, netting just three times in their first six matches and tarnishing the club’s reputation.

Desperate for a win, Spurs seized control early when James Maddison broke the deadlock in the 14th minute.

Maddison, making his first start in 17 months after returning from injury, announced his comeback in style by curling a sublime right-footed shot from outside the box into the corner of the net.

Tottenham’s 1-0 halftime lead was short-lived, as Coventry’s Jack Ludoni equalized four minutes into the second half, threatening to extend Spurs’ winless run.

The hosts, however, quickly regained their composure. Omar Marmoush restored Tottenham’s lead in the 58th minute, much to the relief of the home crowd.

Marmoush’s powerful strike not only marked his first goal for Tottenham but also proved to be the match-winner.

As Spurs clung to their slender advantage, Ben Davies put the result beyond doubt with a stoppage-time goal, sealing a 3-1 victory.

In his post-match comments, Tottenham’s head coach Roberto De Zerbi expressed his relief: This win was crucial, particularly for the position in the table. It’s been painful to look at the standings. It deserved this result today, and honestly, it deserved better in the recent matches too.

Having finally tasted victory after seven grueling matches, Tottenham will look to build momentum when they face Chelsea on October 25, aiming for their first back-to-back wins of the season.
