In the wake of recent provocations involving North Korea’s waste balloons, a fire near the balloon was discovered in Chuncheon, Gangwon, which startled residents.
According to the Gangwon Fire Department on June 11, a fire broke out in a mountain in Hakgok-ri, Dongnae-myeon, Chuncheon, at around 4:50 PM the previous day. Responding to the report, the fire department dispatched about 30 firefighters and extinguished the fire by around 5:03 PM, approximately 10 minutes after receiving the report.
While the fire had no casualties, it burned approximately 710 square feet.
Moreover, a balloon containing leaflets sent by North Korea was found near the fire site. However, the fire department stated, “It is unknown whether there is a connection between the wildfire and the waste balloon from North Korea.” The police and the fire department are investigating the fire’s specific cause.
