In anticipation of Russia’s Victory Day, the Russian and Chinese ambassadors to North Korea convened to reaffirm their nations’ commitment to ongoing cooperation.

The Chinese Embassy in North Korea reported on Friday that Ambassador Wang Yajun and Ambassador Aleksandr Matsegora met at the Chinese Embassy on Wednesday. Military attachés from both embassies were also present at the meeting.

Ambassador Matsegora emphasized Russia’s high regard for its relationship with China, stating that fostering this relationship is a strategic decision made by Russia with long-term considerations in mind.

He highlighted that this year marks the 80th anniversary of both the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and Russia’s Victory Day. Matsegora expressed Russia’s intention to collaborate with China on commemorative activities, using this opportunity to elevate the comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and China to new heights and contribute to greater global stability.

In response, Ambassador Wang noted that under the strategic guidance of both countries’ leaders, Sino-Russian relations have reached unprecedented levels. He pointed out that since the beginning of the year, the leaders of both nations have engaged in two rounds of strategic communication and implemented significant new measures to deepen their comprehensive strategic cooperation.

Wang further stated that China is committed to working with Russia to implement the important consensus reached by their leaders and jointly promote the continued development of Sino-Russian relations. He expressed a desire for both countries to make even greater contributions to global prosperity and stability.

This meeting has garnered attention as it takes place shortly before Russia’s Victory Day on May 9th, amid speculation about whether the leaders from the three countries will attend the celebrations. While it is not yet known whether North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will attend or not, it’s possible that related discussions may have occurred during this gathering.
