North Korea reported on Wednesday that various celebratory events were held across Japan to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon).

The ruling party’s official newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported on its third page that a central celebration for Chongryon’s 70th anniversary took place on May 25 at the Korean Cultural Center in Tokyo. The paper also mentioned that a central commemorative lecture was held at North Korea’s de facto embassy in Tokyo, with additional celebrations occurring at Chongryon’s headquarters in Osaka, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka.

The first and second pages highlighted the party’s 80-year history, declaring it has entered a golden age of party strengthening. The newspaper praised Kim Jong Un’s leadership, stating that by further strengthening and developing the party as the vanguard of the revolution and its organizer under the banner of victory, they have ushered in an unprecedented golden age in their party’s 80-year history.

On Tuesday, a meeting was held to deliver a congratulatory message to the miners, employees, and officials of the Cheonseong Youth Coal Mine on its 60th anniversary. The message noted that the veterans dispatched by the party have formed the backbone of the coal mining workforce, providing the party with tremendous strength, comparable to gaining a thousand troops.

Page 5 stressed the importance of local industrial factories in 20 cities and counties producing high-quality goods that are well-received by the public. It also reported an increasing momentum for timely and high-quality rice planting across various regions.

Page 6 highlighted an exhibit titled, Anti-Japanese Education at the Central Class Education Hall, which focused on the atrocities committed against Koreans during the 1923 Great Kantō Earthquake. An article headlined, Death’s Labor Camp, recounted the forced labor and brutal killings of many Koreans at Japan’s Harima Shipyard in 1912, promoting anti-imperialist class consciousness.
