A machine gun misfire incident occurred at a frontline General Outpost (GOP) on the western front.

The Republic of Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reported that our military confirmed one live round was discharged during a weapons inspection at a western front GOP around 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

The K-6 medium machine gun round, fired from a unit in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, traveled in the direction of North Korea, but the exact impact location remains unconfirmed.

The JCS stated that the unit immediately broadcast a notification to the North Korean side upon the incident, and no unusual activity from North Korean forces has been observed thus far.

Brigadier General Yang Seung Kwan, deputy spokesperson for the JCS, said it is currently investigating the specifics of the incident and further added that it will separately review measures to prevent recurrence.

This accidental discharge at a South Korean Army unit comes approximately one month after a similar incident on April 23, when a K-6 machine gun round was inadvertently fired during a weapons check at a Guard Post (GP) on the central front.
