The South Korean government has confirmed the defection intentions of a North Korean resident who crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) into South Korea earlier this month.
A South Korean Ministry of Unification official stated on Thursday that they have verified the defection intentions of the North Korean resident who crossed the MDL in the central-western front on July 3rd through a joint government investigation. The post-defection procedures are currently underway.
When asked about media reports suggesting that the individual decided to defect due to persistent workplace harassment, the official responded that he’s unable to confirm specific details about the case.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea reported that around 3 to 4 AM on July 3rd, South Korean forces identified an unknown individual near a river along the MDL in the central-western front. They conducted a tactical operation to secure the person.
The North Korean individual, who identified as a civilian, reportedly concealed themselves in the riverbank vegetation, remaining stationary during daylight hours and moving under the cover of darkness. South Korean forces made initial contact approximately 100 meters (about 328ft) from the individual’s position. After confirming that the person was unarmed, they stated that they are the South Korean military, ensuring the individual’s safe passage before successfully extracting the individual.
The North Korean resident who expressed intentions to defect will undergo resettlement support procedures in accordance with the North Korean Defectors Protection and Settlement Support Act.
Typically, individuals will first undergo protective screening at undisclosed intelligence facilities. They will then be transferred to Hanawon, the South Korean Ministry of Unification’s settlement support center for North Korean defectors, before being assigned to a local government for continued assistance and monitoring.
