Analysts predict that U.S. President Donald Trump, after failing to secure a ceasefire during the U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska, will be eager for a visible success at the upcoming U.S.-South Korea summit on August 25.

Victor Cha, the Korea Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), appeared on a CSIS-hosted podcast on Monday and assessed that the recent summit between Putin and Trump was not a significant victory for the U.S. President.

Cha remarked that anyone familiar with the Korean situation would have been reminded of the 2019 Hanoi summit between North Korea and the U.S., particularly because President Trump left the meeting prematurely.

He pointed out that media reports indicated the cancellation of the planned lunch during the U.S.-Russia meeting, drawing parallels to Trump’s abrupt termination of his meeting with Kim Jong Un (the General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea) in Hanoi, citing a lack of agreement.

Cha emphasized that some tangible success at the upcoming U.S.-South Korea summit, given his aversion to repeated failures. This could potentially create a positive atmosphere for the meeting.

He noted that South Korea has brought significant offerings to the table, including a 350 billion USD investment in the U.S. and cooperation in shipbuilding. Cha views this summit as the first real opportunity for the two leaders to engage in an in-depth discussion on the North Korean issue.

Cha predicted that while trade and tariff concerns have dominated previous U.S.-South Korea discussions, the establishment of a framework for these matters now allows for more substantive conversations about North Korea, whether in the Oval Office, during cabinet meetings, or over lunch.

In related news, President Lee Jae-myung will make an official visit to the U.S. from August 24 to 26 at President Trump’s invitation. The U.S.-South Korea summit is scheduled for August 25.
