In a recent incident on August 19, the United Nations Command (UNC) confirmed that over 30 North Korean troops engaged in maintenance and construction work crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), prompting warning shots from South Korean forces.

The UNC issued a separate press statement on August 24, acknowledging the incident and stating that personnel from the Military Armistice Commission are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.

According to the UNC, South Korean forces attempted to alert the North Korean troops to their MDL violation through multiple warning broadcasts. However, these warnings went unanswered by the North Korean personnel.

In response to the lack of compliance, South Korean forces fired warning shots in a designated area, effectively forcing the North Korean troops to retreat north of the MDL.

The UNC noted that North Korea had provided prior notification about its activities within the DMZ, emphasizing the importance of such communication in reducing misunderstandings and the risk of unintended incidents.

Prior to this statement, on August 23, North Korean Army General and Deputy Chief of the General Staff, Ko Jong-chol, issued a statement claiming that South Korean forces fired approximately 10 warning shots at North Korean troops working near the MDL on August 19, characterizing this action as a serious provocation.
