During his visit to a solid-fuel engine research facility prior to China’s Victory Day events, Kim Jong Un hinted at the development of a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), the Hwasong-20.

The Korean Central News Agency reported on Tuesday that Kim had visited the Chemical Materials Comprehensive Research Institute, a subsidiary of the Missile Command, on Monday. During his visit, he met with experts in carbon fiber composite materials and received briefings on their research progress.

According to the report, this institute has been developing high-power solid engines using carbon fiber composites in line with the core defense technology development plan approved at the 9th Party Congress. Over the past two years, the institute has conducted eight ground tests to verify the engine’s reliability and accuracy. During his visit, Kim reviewed the test results and discussed plans for establishing specialized production facilities.

The report also revealed that the new solid-fuel engine, utilizing carbon fiber composite materials, has a maximum thrust of 1960 kN. This engine is slated for use in the Hwasong-19 series of ICBMs and the next-generation Hwasong-20 missile.

After inspecting the research facility, Kim praised the achievements as significant milestones that herald a major transformation in strengthening and expanding the strategic missile capabilities. He proposed awarding high-level state honors to the scientists at the institute for their contributions.

In November of last year, North Korea announced the successful test launch of the new Hwasong-19 ICBM, claiming it to be the final version of their ICBM arsenal, intended to operate alongside the existing Hwasong-18.
