During his visit to China, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing on Wednesday. The two leaders discussed various issues, including strengthening bilateral relations.
This summit marked their first meeting in over 14 months, following President Putin’s visit to Pyongyang on June 19th of last year.
Russian media outlets, including TASS and RIA Novosti, reported that after attending China’s 80th Victory Day parade, the two leaders traveled together to the meeting venue in President Putin’s ceremonial Aurus Senat limousine.
At the meeting, Putin expressed his satisfaction with the opportunity for a private discussion with Kim, stating that they would have the chance to address their countries’ relationship at all levels and across various areas. He also noted that recent Russia–North Korea ties have evolved into a special relationship characterized by trust, friendship, and alliance, and he thanked North Korea for its military involvement in the Ukraine conflict.
Putin stated that under Kim’s command, special forces participated in the liberation operation in the Kursk region, which aligns perfectly with the new agreement. Putin further stated that he wants to emphasize that the soldiers fought with exceptional bravery and heroism.
He added that Russia would never forget North Korea’s participation in the fight against what he termed modern neo-Nazism, and he asked Kim to convey his heartfelt gratitude to the entire North Korean population.
In response, Kim affirmed that Russia–North Korea relations are developing on all fronts, emphasizing that if North Korea can assist Russia, it will undoubtedly do so and it’s their fraternal duty.
On the same day, both leaders attended the 80th anniversary parade commemorating China’s victory in the People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Following the parade, they joined other world leaders at a commemorative reception.
