A recent incident at the central front saw a North Korean soldier defect on foot, with two armed North Korean troops, suspected to be pursuing him, crossing the Military Demarcation Line (MDL).
Military sources revealed on Thursday that on Sunday, an unarmed North Korean soldier crossed the MDL in Gangwon Province and expressed his intention to defect. Shortly afterward, two armed North Korean soldiers breached the MDL, advancing to within 200 meters of a South Korean guard post (GP).
The armed soldiers are believed to have been part of a pursuit team dispatched to capture the defector. South Korean forces issued warning broadcasts and fired warning shots, prompting the suspected pursuit team to retreat back into North Korean territory.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff had initially reported on Sunday that they had secured one North Korean defector and stated there were no unusual activities from North Korean forces. However, the armed incursion across the MDL in the defection area later emerged as a significant development.
According to the Joint Chiefs, the defection occurred at around 7 a.m., while the two other North Korean soldiers crossed the MDL around noon. Due to uncertainty about whether these individuals were part of a pursuit team, military officials decided to withhold the information based on their assessment.
Some analysts suggest that the decision not to disclose details about the frontline situation was a deliberate move to avoid provoking North Korea.
In a separate incident on the same day, approximately 20 North Korean soldiers stationed in a barren area near the western front in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, also crossed the MDL. They too withdrew after South Korean forces fired warning shots.
